About

The oppressed and persecuted are much more than just statistics;
they are real people with individual faces, voices, hopes and dreams.
No one should be forgotten.

HART works to provide aid and advocacy for those who are, or who have been, suffering oppression and persecution, and who are largely neglected by the international media.

Founded in 2003 by Baroness Caroline Cox, a human rights activist, HART makes every Endeavour to be a ‘voice for the voiceless’ for those who may trapped behind closed borders, not served by other major aid organisations, and who tend to be unreached, unhelped and unheard.

HART relies on first-hand evidence of human rights violations, using this as a basis for a powerful twin-track programme of international advocacy in such arenas as the House of Lords and the media, and targeted aid-work focusing on sustainable community development, local partnership and regional networks of support.

HART believe that in order to truly meet the needs and requirements of the persecuted, oppressed and overlooked; the direction and management of aid must primarily involve the local people it wishes to help. The projects funded by HART are always seen as belonging to those benefiting.

In addition to proving a primary consideration for all Aid given by HART, the notion of ‘Authenticity’ is also relevant to all other principles of HART’s work. ‘Authenticity’ interpreted as truth, is thus, essential for both ‘Advocacy’ and ‘Accountability’ as understood by HART.

First hand evidence of the reality and truth of the oppression and persecution suffered and the humanitarian requirements needed, enables accurate knowledge, vital for the fulfillment of ‘Advocacy’ and ‘Accountability’.

Although HART has a relatively large operational remit regarding humanitarian aid, only four people are employed by the London office. Working as a small, close team allows for direct focus on and close collaboration with, local partners abroad. This provides for a greater understanding of what is actually needed and builds towards the achievement of control and empowerment for the local people.
