Remember

The oppressed and persecuted are much more than just statistics;
they are real people with individual faces, voices, hopes and dreams.
No one should be forgotten.

Building a School in South Sudan

Fifty years of deadly civil war in South Sudan meant that children were forced to learn how to fire AK47s, run from helicopter gunships and recognise whether planes would drop food or bombs. Childhood memories are not only of family and friendship, but also of people dying in times of famine, and of year-long walks to the refugee camps of Kenya.

Since the precarious peace of 2005, many refugees have returned to their home villages to share the precious education they received. Marol Academy is the leading school of Gorgrial East, run by these returning heroes, and it hopes to support the education of the other 700,000 Apuk Dinka.
After kind support, including provision from The Vodafone Foundation, I will be spending the next year building this school in South Sudan. Having left my job at one of England’s favourite schools, I know it will be a daunting privilege to be taken on this adventure. I would love your thoughts, your upport and for you to journey with me via my blog.
