This year has been the bloodiest year since the beginning of Boko Haram’s insurgency. In terms of victims, it has been almost as deadly as the previous five years of the group’s violent insurgency together. Indeed, as the group tightens its grip over swathes of territory in northern Nigeria, Boko Haram’s brutality has become evermore clear. Torture, indiscriminate killings, abductions and rape are all features that characterise Boko Haram’s reign of terror in the north of the country. At the same time, the group’s insurgency has also highlighted the government’s incompetence in dealing with such a serious threat. Unfortunately, however, it is the civilians who bear the greatest burden of this difficult situation. The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates that 1.5 million people in the six northeastern states of Nigeria have been displaced as a result of Boko Haram’s insurgency. If the situation remains unchanged, plenty more civilians will be affected by the group’s bloody insurgency.
