Genocide Prevention Month – Launch Event
Wednesday 2nd April 2014 , 6.30pm - 8pm
Committee Room 3A, House of Lords, Westminster
Join us to launch #StandforSudan, a campaign which will run throughout April to raise awareness of the longest running genocide in history that is occurring today in Sudan.
President al-Bashir has already been indicted for genocide in Darfur; yet he continues to attack civilians with impunity. In 2011, he expanded his genocidal campaign to South Kordofan and Blue Nile states where, as a result, 800,000 people have been internally displaced and 1.2 million are in need of humanitarian assistance. Since December, President al-Bashir has dramatically increased the aerial bombardment of civilian areas, using more sophisticated weaponry. Famine is growing rapidly, but the Government in Khartoum are denying access for humanitarian aid. Human rights defenders are being arrested, tortured and killed in custody. Download the infographic below to find out more.
Our campaign calls for people to #standforsudan, by demanding an end to the impunity President al-Bashir enjoys and for humanitarian access to civilian populations. Join us for the Launch of this campaign on the 2nd April. Speakers including HART CEO Baroness Cox, Lord Alton, Iain Morley QC and Director of René Cassin, Shauna Leven will discuss the situation in Blue Nile, South Kordofan, Darfur, and other marginalised areas of Sudan. Formal talks will take place between 6.30pm and 7.15pm, but feel free to drop by any time to discuss how you can join the campaign.
We will use the event to launch our petition, which calls upon governments around the world to recognise the genocide that is currently being carried out in South Kordofan and Blue Nile States, Sudan and to increase pressure upon the Sudanese Government to allow unhindered humanitarian access to the civilian population.
Join us at this event to find out how you can #StandforSudan.
