Hayma’s favourite subject at school was zoology. She loved learning about different animals and how to care for them and their habitats. Before the military coup, she was looking forward to finishing her studies and dreamed of starting a small business in her home village.

When the gun shots and air strikes began, she escaped quickly with her family on motorbikes. Hayma did not know what to pack or where to go. All of her friends and family left the village – including young children, pregnant women and the elderly. Many of their homes were burned or destroyed.

Now, it is too dangerous for Hayma to return to her village. She is forced to endure severe food shortages and drought. Hayma told us: “I am praying for this to be over. I don’t know how long we will have to go on. It feels like my future is lost. Some days I have little to no food so the elderly and my parents can eat.” She still dreams of returning home and running her own business.
