Letter Sent to Prime Minister Boris Johnson Regarding The Urgent Humanitarian Situation in Syria 17/08/2020

Baroness Cox, alongside 19 co-signatories, has today written to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, regarding the current humanitarian situation in Syria and the continued imposition of blanket economic sanctions on the Government of Syria which disproportionately harm the Syrian people.

The letter comes after a letter sent to Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab on 23 July, was met with an unsatisfactory response.

Today’s letter is again evidenced by testimony from UN human rights experts who argue the current sanctions being imposed on Syria are worsening the humanitarian situation in the country and severely impacting the country’s attempts to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is again signed by two former British Ambassadors to Syria, two former Archbishops of Canterbury, a former Chief of General Staff of the British Army and a former First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff.

We await the Government’s response.

The letter can be downloaded and read in full below.
