Burma
- After months of public silence, Aung San Suu Kyi’s office donates 300 million Kyats ($222,000) to people displaced by the conflict in Kachin State.
- Hundreds March With the Popular Movement for Peace on Monday – calling for peaceful negotiations rather than violence.
- Peace conference date set for 28th February 2017. The government has confirmed that the second 21st Century Panglong Conference will be held in Nay Pyi Taw.
- Myanmar rejects UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser for the Prevention of Genocide , Adama Dieng’s assertion that the ‘existing commission is not a credible option to undertake the new investigation’, claiming that it was focused on the ‘truth’ and not pleasing the UN.
- Anti-Rohingya protesters gathered at a Yangon port on yesterday to meet a Malaysian ship carrying aid for thousands of persecuted Rohingya. Burma initially refused to allow the ship into its waters and has barred it from sailing to Rakhine’s state capital Sittwe. The government has also demanded that the aid be distributed to both Rohingya and Buddhist ethnic Rakhines.
- The Burmese army has formed an investigation team comprising to investigate human rights abuses committed by security forces after United Nations released a report claiming Burma‘s security forces had committed mass killings and gang rapes of Rohingya Muslims.
Nigeria
- As part of efforts to avoid possible clash between the Fulani herdsmen and the civil populace, the Bayelsa State Government has donated 1,200 hectares of land to the Fulani in the state.
- Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari will remain in the UK to complete medical tests, sparkling rumours of his ill-health.

South Sudan

- The new chief of the UN Mission in South Sudan David Shearer has called for an inclusive dialogue for all stakeholders to bring an end to the ongoing conflict across the country.
- South Sudan’s government has announced a plan to silence guns of war across the country by 2020 through President Kiir’s call for national dialogue in the country.
- 30 cases of cholera killing 12, in Cholera outbreak in Jonglei.
- South Sudan president Salva Kiir has threatened war if the armed opposition continue to reject his calls for national dialogue saying: “If they don’t listen to the voices which call for peace, I will declare war against them’.
- Refugee numbers cross the 1.5 million mark according to a statement issued by the UNHCR It is thought there are an additional 2.1 million people displaced inside South Sudan.
Sudan
- Human rights activist, Dr Mudawi Ibrahim, who has been in detention in Khartoum’s Kober prison since the beginning of December 2016, has resumed his hunger strike, demanding a response from the authorities to memoranda submitted for his release.
