SWAN Campaigning for Equal Access to Education

HART’s partner SWAN (Shan Women’s Action Network) is campaigning to commemorate 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

They are urging the Government of Myanmar to address violence against women in education in Shan State and other ethnic areas, to take greater measures in promoting equal educational opportunities for young women and girls and to take steps towards achieving equality through the elimination of sexist materials and learning frameworks.

The on-going armed conflict and presence of armed actors hinder access to education for women and girls which leads to the increased likelihood that girls will drop out of school early to fulfil domestic duties. READ THEIR STATEMENT HERE

To mark the 16 days, which started on the 25th of November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and ends on the 10th of December, Human Rights Day, SWAN is highlighting 16 reasons why girls deserve access to education.
