HART Nigeria Briefing: December/January 2014/15

18 February 2015

2014 was one of the bloodiest years in Nigeria since Boko Haram’s insurgency campaign of bombings, abductions and assassinations began 6 years ago. It is unlikely 2015 will be any different; in fact it may already be bloodier than last year. The government of incumbent Goodluck Jonathan has identified two long-term security-related areas it wishes to address, alongside tackling expected electoral violence of the already postponed 2015 elections. They include, combating the Boko Haram insurgency, one of the main reasons given for postponing the elections to 28th March 2015, and tackling corruption. While some strategies of national security have been put in place, most observers are in agreement that postponement of the elections was a hindrance to democracy and moreover a move capable of engendering more violence.

Innocent civilians are ultimately the ones who pay the price for the inability of Africa’s most populous country to protect them, and if within 6 weeks Boko Haram’s insurgency isn’t halted, then this pattern will inevitably continue. This new briefing provides a timeline of events and attacks in the last two months, and details the attempts to bring an end to the Boko Haram insurgency.
