Abyei: Flooding destroys homes and crops

23 September 2024

– Bethany Oliver-Dee, Communications Coordinator

3,000 houses in Abyei town have been destroyed by heavy rain and floods. Our partners need your help to provide urgent care to isolated communities.

Families are evacuating to higher ground, or using road sides, churches and school compounds as temporary accommodation. HART’s local partner in the region, the Anglican Diocese of Abyei, is coordinating a frontline emergency response.

Our first priority is support for 200 of the most vulnerable households: 3,125 people in total, who now require urgent assistance. Aid packages will consist of food supplies and NFIs (non-food items), such as plastic sheets, sleeping mats, and mosquito nets to protect children from malaria.

The people of Abyei are abandoned by both Sudans. Flooding is destroying the crops and local homes.

Michael Deng Bol, Anglican Bishop of Abyei

The effects of the flooding are far-reaching. Not only has it caused displacement and turmoil, but it has also left crops for the 2024-25 harvest underwater. With failed crops, the prospect of long-term hunger is now looming over local communities.

Thanks to your support, we have already provided assistance for refugees who were forcibly displaced to Abyei from Sudan due to violence. The flooding has put pressure on already-scarce resources, and our local partners are working around the clock to meet immediate needs while facing an uncertain future without this year’s harvest.

Abyei is a disputed region between Sudan and South Sudan. Its contested status is a barrier to humanitarian access. With no recognised government, there is confusion about who should coordinate and implement the delivery of aid. International agencies often choose not to engage, believing the issues to be too complex, politically sensitive or outside their mandate. Isolated communities are left to fend for themselves.

Our local partners are perfectly placed to reach people in need with emergency relief. They are a lifeline to the local community and refugees alike. With your help, we can save lives and support vulnerable families in the face of this sudden challenge.
