Burma
- Farmers in Burma continue to be the target of military land grabbing. Human Rights Watch urged Burma’s government to urgently act to end the unlawful seizure of land in Karen state.
- Burmese soldiers have been accused of raping and killing Rohingya Muslims. Concerns are being raised regarding the government’s limited influence over the military.
Nigeria
- A Human Rights Watch has found Boko Haram refugees in Nigeria have been raped by officials. The NGO stated it had documented 43 cases of women and girls who had been abused by camp leaders, policemen and soldiers.
- A high school in Maiduguri reopened more than two years after being closed out of fear of Boko Haram attacks. A teacher at the school spoke to France24 of his joy in returning.
Uganda
- In Uganda gay men have stated police use torturous methods to prove homosexuality. Uganda is one of the 36 countries in Africa where homosexuality is illegal.
Sudan
- 20 people have been killed in clashes in West Darfur State. An eyewitness stated that gunmen attacked cattle herders in the Mara area.
South Sudan
- The UN has sacked the South Sudan peacekeeping chief in the aftermath of a report that stated failures to protect civilians in July.
- Bishops have urged the Pope to visit war-torn South Sudan in order to foster peace.
