News from HART:
- Our team recently returned from a field visit to Nagorno-Karabakh where we met our local partners and had interesting conversations on the present situation. We will also be providing a detailed report on our visit, soon. Burma
- A Dutch man has been jailed in Burma for three months for unplugging the loudspeaker of Buddhist sermon. He was found clearly guilty of insulting religion.
- Burma has also scrapped a stringent law which had been used by the former military to silence opponents. The Emergency Provisions Act introduced in 1950 allowed punishments of up to seven years for minor crimes such as spreading false news.
India
- A 26 Year old Dalit man from Dindigul has been hacked to death by family members of his lover, a caste Hindu woman. The murder took place inside a temple.
- Indian troops are believed to have killed three suspected militants in Indian-administered Kashmir. Police say the militants were shot dead after a heavy gun battle.
Nigeria
- A recent report into Boko Haram has found that female members of the organisation were almost as likely as men to deployed as fighters.
- The IMF is prepared to lend money to Nigeria. The managing director Christine Largade stated: “If we want to improve the inequality issue, we must have a strong international safety net.”
Uganda
- Former FDC President Dr. Besigye has pointed out the system to be more problematic than the current President, in a recent commentary. In his words, “you spend $50,000 on just sponsoring the speakers and their MPs to go abroad and enjoy life, yet Ugandans in Teso and other regions are starving.”
Sudan
- Concerns continue to grow over Sudan government’s use of chemical weapons in Jebel Marra The United Nations peacekeeping chief has recently requested the government to co-operate on all investigations.
- In an attack against the administrative unit of Al-Malam locality, two people were killed by unknown gunmen. South Darfur’s police director has confirmed that joint patrol teams have been deployed and security has been further tightened in the region.
South Sudan
- As South Sudan’s rebel leader Riek Machar renews conflict against the present government, the international community came together to condemn the attacks saying that it will not improve the humanitarian situation in South Sudan.
- Human rights advocate and journalist, Mr Peter Gai, is on the run after being accused of providing information to the Sentry Report, which reveals corruption among South Sudanese leaders.
