Burma

- The US State Department has published the annual Trafficking in Persons Report which has classified Burma as one of the world’s worst human trafficking offenders. According to The Washington Post, Burma’s status has been demoted “from the Tier 2 watchlist to a Tier 3 country”. The Irrawaddy has also reported on this matter, stating that “A Tier 3 rating can trigger sanctions limiting access to US and international aid.” According to The Washington Post, “It is hoped the poor rating will goad the government to work harder to stop the use of child soldiers and forced labor” and that the Report, “also appears to express U.S. concern over persecution of the Rohingya Muslim minority”.
- Last week, it was reported that “200-strong mob in a Burmese village assaulted a Muslim man, ransacked his home, and destroyed the village mosque and Muslim cemetery”. Yet, according to the Asian Correspondent, officials of the Bago province in which this violence took place are hesitant to take action. Bago’s “Chief Minister U Win Thein said that no arrests will be made” in fear of escalating the violence.
- According to The Irrawaddy, the Burma Army has been accused of killing, “seven rural residents of northern Shan State’s Lashio Township”.
India

Nagorno-Karabakh
- France has reaffirmed their plans to host a summit on Nagorno Karabakh, to host the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan in a summit aimed at helping to resolve the crisis.
Nigeria
- The Daily Mail has reported that in Nigeria’s Boko Haram-hit northeast, “Tens of thousands of children will die of malnutrition this year unless they receive treatment soon”.
- Buhari has urged leaders of the Delta to “pacify people in the restive southern region” after a series of attacks by the Niger Delta Avengers.
- It has been reported that two Indian men have been abducted by Boko Haram.
Sudan
- OCHA’s latest report reveals that “South Sudan currently hosts 270,000 refugees, mainly from Sudan”.
- Radio Dabanga has reported that seven people have been injured in Sudan’s South Kordofan following a civil clash.
- According to the Daily Mail, the “UN Security Council has extended the mandate of an international peacekeeping force in Darfur for a year despite fierce opposition from the Sudanese government”.
South Sudan

- “More than 50 people have been killed in fighting between a new rebel group and government troops in a remote town in South Sudan”, reported the Associated Press.
- After fighting broke out in Wau last week, thousands of people have fled their homes and are left in “dire need of help”, according to MSF. Al Jazeera has also reported on the matter, stating that “Tens of thousands of people have fled fighting in northwestern South Sudan…as food shortages in the country hit their highest levels in two years”.
- Meanwhile, the UN has announced that it has opened its gates in Wau town to “allow civilians fleeing violence access and protection”.
Uganda
- UNICEF has “urged Uganda to invest in its poorest communities to reduce the deaths of children under the age of five”.
- According to The World Weekly, Uganda has seen its HIV infection rate drop by 50% over the last four years.
