Solemn Remembrance: Two years since the ethnic cleansing of Nagorno Karabakh

19 September 2025

Today marks two years since the ethnic cleansing of Nagorno Karabakh. On 19 September 2023, following a nine-month humanitarian blockade, Azerbaijan’s final military offensive led to the exodus of more than 100,000 Armenians.

The below illustration, by Mariia Oganian, was awarded 1st place in the Senior Creative category for the HART Prize Human Rights 2025. The piece captures the entrant’s heartache about the loss of her homeland and the suffering of refugees.

This piece was made in memory of all the people who sacrificed their life for our freedom and our culture.

Two years on, HART’s message remains clear: failure to act gives Azerbaijan a green light to continue its violations of international law with impunity.

  • We call for the immediate and unconditional release of Armenian hostages in Azerbaijan. Their unlawful detention undermines peace efforts and stability in the region. Read our open letter to the UK Government here.

  • We call for meaningful dialogue between Azerbaijan and the forcibly displaced population of Nagorno Karabakh. Read our statement in support of the Swiss Peace Initiative for Nagorno Karabakh here.
