BurmaÂ
- A United Nations official has stated that Rohingyas in Burma are facing ‘ethnic cleansing’. Up to 30,000 members of the ethnic community have abandoned their homes to escape the unfolding violence.
- New satellite imagery from Burma’s western Rakhine state has revealed mass destruction of ethnic Rohingya villages. Human Rights Watch has called for an urgent UN investigation.
Nigeria
- Nigerian security forces are alleged to have killed more than 150 peaceful protestors since August 2015. Amnesty International stated the military used live ammunition and deadly force against pro-Biafra protestors campaigning for an independent state in the south-east.

- More than 120,000 people (mostly children) are at risk of starving to death in the next year in areas affected by Boko Haram. The UN’s warning also stated that more than 2 million people had been displaced by the conflict.
Uganda
- Several Ugandan nationals have been killed in a recent attack by gunmen in South Sudan. The attacks were carried out on locals travelling from Juba City to Kampala in Uganda.
- Uganda reinstates its stance on anti-homosexuality by arresting an eight-year-old girl on suspicion of being gay. The arrest was made based on a report by her neighbour for having romantic relationships with other girls of her age.
Sudan
- In a protest against 30% price hike on fuel, around 300 Sudanese students marched on the streets of Khartoum. The price hike has had a strong effect on prices of basic needs such as medicines.
- Sudan’s Ministry of Justice and Ministry of International Co-operation along with the United Nations have come together to launch a programme that enhances Rule of Law in Darfur. The programme will help establish peace and social stability.
South Sudan
- Attacks resurfaced in Jonglei state of South Sudan whereby 25 civilians have been killed. Authorities have reported stating that the attacks were carried out by rebel groups linked to opposition leader Riek Machar.
- Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) has recently signed an action plan to stop the recruitment of child soldiers. SPLM-N is one of the 59 rebel groups on the United Nations list to have committed grave violations on children.
