HART Statement on Developments in Burma

1 February 2021

HART is deeply concerned by reports that Burma’s military has taken control of the country and declared a year-long state of emergency. Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior government leaders were arrested and taken to prison this morning.

HART remains steadfast in its support for Burma’s democratic transition of power and efforts to promote peace, human rights, and development in the country. HART strongly believes the rule of law and the democratic process must be upheld, and the rights of all Burmese citizens must be respected.

Whilst widespread internet and communications blackouts continue to disrupt the flow of information from the country, HART is monitoring the situation closely and will provide further updates when possible.
