HART Report: Emergency Assistance for Massacre Survivors in Abyei

24 September 2021

At 5.30am on Sunday 16th May 2021, a violent incident in Dungob Alei, (a disputed region along the Sudan/South Sudan border), killed 13 people, wounded 8 others, burned down 45 houses, destroyed a medical facility, a prayer facility and displaced more than 3,000 people.

It was quickly determined that food aid was the number one priority for our partners and their community as they looked to care and provide for the newly displaced people. Therefore, at the request of our partner the Diocese of Abyei, we immediately sent funds for emergency support. These funds were used to provide emergency food items such as grain, rice, green beans, oil and salt to those who had been forced to flee their homes with nothing but the clothes on their back.

The Diocese of Abyei successfully distributed the emergency food aid to those displaced, ensuring that each household received a fair share of the food items and that all members of the community were provided for.

In total the emergency relief provided support to 82 households and 410 people.
