Sudan: HART urges UK Govt to direct aid to Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile

27 February 2024

Deadly armed conflict has displaced millions of people in Sudan. Many travel south to seek refuge in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile. They arrive hungry – in many cases malnourished. But local food stocks are declining, quickly.

“Everyone predicts famine,” says HART’s humanitarian partner in the region. “The UN Mission has suspended its operations… Draught, inconsistent rainfall, swarms of locusts, birds and other hazards affect the plantations. This dry season will last for at least three months, before the next rainy season begins in May. The situation is dire.”

As international powers weigh up their response to crises across the country, we are urging the UK Government “not to lose sight” of what is happening in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile. There is an urgent need for unfettered humanitarian access.
